WORK-AT-HOME MOM PURSUES DREAM OF RECORDING A CD FOR HER CHILDREN
WEAVERVILLE, NC--Within a few short months of her 35th birthday, songwriter Kelly Land had begun to strum chords on the guitar her husband bought for her. When the local radio station she worked for closed its doors and she found herself without a job, Land turned her energies to managing and promoting several websites she owns, and to writing songs.
A trusted friend, Barry Lee, encouraged her to record some songs, and ensured her he would help. Interested, but with no money for studio time, Kelly and Lee set-up a makeshift recording in a spare room at Lee’s house in Asheville. They’re still learning and working on churning out a decent mix.
"I have no intentions of being the next singing sensation," Land says. "Nor do I think I'm Mariah Carey. But I have a lot to say, a decent voice, minimal guitar skills and passion."
It's hard to find the time to make music with two kids, two dogs, two cats, one husband, a house to keep in order and five websites to run, but Land keeps trying. Her original goal was to take the 22 songs she’s written and record them on CD. She is still pursuing that dream.
"I’m not a perfectionist," Land states. "The project doesn’t have to turn out flawless. ‘Good enough’ would be great right now. I just want to leave my kids, who are 3 and 9, something to hoot and holler about after I’m gone." She laughs. "That way, they can put on my CD at family reunions and tell their kids and grandkids that this was their great grandmother!"
Motivated by other moms who sing to the stereo on their way to work and dream of hitting the big time, Land says they are a big part of her inspiration. Lands philosophy of life is to tackle it head-on and leave no regrets. Nearing 38 years old, she says she still feels 25 and plans to keep trying to accomplish what she feels is important. "Supermom does exist," Kelly asserts. "She's everywhere. I'm just one version of her."
Having worked in radio for years, she has talked to many people about the songs they like and what it is about certain songs that move them. Still unsure of exactly what that illusive inspiration is, Land hopes that one day one of her songs will touch someone in the same way.
